Master Getting Stuff Done and Have Fun Along the Way (Part 5)

“A moment’s insight is sometimes worth a life’s experience.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

So you have your five folders created; both on your desktop and on your side desk or return.  I am of course assuming that you have carefully chosen the 5 projects or goals that you will be focusing your energy towards accomplishing.  Ideally, you have gone out and purchased a small digital tape recorder that you can jack directly into your computer.  Your workspace, your computer desktop and your real desktop are cleaned.  In other words, the area that you will be working at is clean, there are no visual distractions.  Great!

So, let’s talk about capturing.  I am sure that you have had great ideas, or a brilliant insight, or even a unique solution to a problem, and then it faded or was lost before you could write it down or capture it.  Since we are talking here about really getting things done, efficiently, elegantly and pleasureably, we don’t have time to lose great ideas anymore. “Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.” ~Vincent Van Gogh

We have been looking at getting projects done. First a quick recap; Mentally consider following this process for every project you begin :

  • 1) What do I want?
  • 2) Why do I want it?
  • 3) What actions will I take to achieve it?

This entry will focus on that 3rd step, the place where the rubber meets the road, taking action. More >

“Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes into us at midnight very clean. It’s perfect when it arrives and it puts itself in our hands. It hopes we’ve learned something from yesterday.” ~John Wayne

Projects. Big projects. I love them! I love them because when I get big projects done, big positive changes happen in my life. Heck, big positive changes happen in my life while I am getting myself sufficiently motivated and educated and organized to achieve big projects. I’ll say it again: “I love big projects!”With that said, how do you organize yourself to get them done, get them done on time, and have a blast along the way! (Pretend you are hearing John Wayne’s voice now) “Glad you asked that pilgrim.” (John Wayne can become quiet again although he is great fun to invoke at times.)

We have talked about the first 2 steps already: 1) What do you want, as clearly as you can define it, when your project or task is complete? 2) Why do you want it? What will it mean to you and you are looking for passion and excitement and synergy here! 3) What specific actions will you take in order to get this task or project done? (And for me and I suggest for you, rewrite that last statement like this: What specific actions will I take in order to get this task or project done and have an absolute blast…a wonderful time along the way?)

Yep. Time to look at Step 3) Specific actions. More >

“Another dream that failed. There’s nothing sadder.” ~Kirk, “This side of Paradise”, Star Trek, stardate 3417.3 (or so)

Last time we talked about handling projects – specifically how I handle projects. We made it thru the first step of an actual project that I am currently working on. In this entry, we will talk about “why”.

You may think you know why you are doing a project and almost certainly you know some of the reasons. Even so, by taking a little more time and digging deeper you can often uncover hidden benefits and reasons for getting a project done and this is a very good thing indeed. The more reasons you have for completing something, the more likely you will find ways to make it happen. Projects can get long. Projects can get boring. By uncovering things about getting a project done that you are passionate about, or that tie into things that you are passionate about, you will find the energy and drive to make it thru. More >
