What Sir Richard Branson Taught Me
Jul 31st
“I believe in benevolent dictatorship provided I am the dictator.” ~Richard Branson
I just got back from a business trip to Minneapolis and St. Paul; Minnesota, USA. I had a great time – both personally and professionally. I hadn’t been to the twin cities since 1975 and I had no idea what to expect. What I found was a pair of modern cities with great nightlife, great restaurants and museums and just a really nice upbeat feeling. I’m working now to set up some speaking engagements and I can’t wait to go back. I’ll talk more about my trip and places you might want to go another time.
On to Richard Branson and what I have learned from him. I can hear you asking: “Did you meet him?”. Nope. Sadly I haven’t had the chance to meet Sir Richard Branson yet. What I was lucky enough to do was finish reading “Losing My Virginity”; a book that he wrote in 1998. I am not sure that he was “Sir” when he wrote this book, but he was already a most amazing man.
Reading, NLP, Modeling and Richard Branson
i am an avid reader – both fiction and nonfiction books are my very good friends. i estimate that I read around one hundred and fifty to two hundred books per year. As long as I can remember, I have had the gift of rapid reading and it has served me well. It is one of my secrets of success, but reading this many books is not something that I expect anyone else to adopt; and you certainly don’t need to read even a fraction of this many books to absolutely master your chosen field of study.
You do need to read though and I encourage you to read autobiographies, of the people that you admire, whenever you can. My life has been totally transformed from the reading of perhaps a dozen great autobiographies and greatly influenced by a few more. In the case of Sir Richard Branson, I admired what he had achieved and I want to see what he did to achieve it. In NLPish terms, I wanted to model the repeatable aspects of him and see what I could learn and potentially adopt to make my own business journey more enjoyable and more successful.
What Sir Richard Branson Taught Me
You can model many things from a person. Actions, capabilities, beliefs, their identity and even their connection to their creator or to the universe can be extracted and be potentially adopted. For me, here are the main things that I was able to get from my reading of “Losing My Virginity”:
- I believe that Richard views life as a great adventure that is meant to be lived. Throughout the book, adventure is a very common theme. What would you do or attempt to do if you viewed life this way? (This by the way is a belief of Richard’s and also a life metaphor – I believe his dominate one.)
- Richard is great at creating a brand that people want to be associated with. Like Apple is today, Richard’s Virgin brand became something that people wanted to be involved with – they wanted to shop there, hang out there, travel there – Richard carefully nurtured the image of his brand to give his company a huge competitive advantage. How is your brand? I am still evolving mine, but you can bet that I am going to pay attention to it now!
- Richard is great at surrounding himself with people that have the skills that he does not. He is fantastic at forming great partnerships and at recruiting top talent that compliment his skills. How about you? Are you spending your time doing what you are meant to do and having someone else do the parts that are tough for you, but easy for them? What if you did – what great things might happen?
- Richard is not afraid to take big risks to achieve what he wants, and he believes that he will find a way to make whatever it is happen. How about you? Are you willing to take big risks for the right cause? What might it be like if you were?
- Richard believes in following his gut instincts – right or wrong – and over time his gut instinct has gotten very good indeed at being right – by being right and sometimes by being massively wrong! For me, if I view something that did not do what I want as a learning experience and not as a failure, I am much more likely to take sufficient action to make my dreams happen. If I viewed every mistake or sub-optimal result as a failure, I would soon quit – I hate to fail!
- I am not sure if Richard is fearless in self-promotion or simply gets himself to act that way. It really doesn’t matter – Richard promotes himself and his ideas again and again until he gets the results he wants or he finds out that something else is actually more valuable to go after. What about you? What would your life be like is you could fearlessly promote yourself and your ideas – if the fear of rejection simply didn’t exist for you? I know for me, getting past the fear of rejection was the turning point in my life.
Richard may or may not say that these are the key elements of his unusual success, but these are the items that caught my attention. I guarantee that I did some sorting, both consciously and unconsciously while compiling this list. I can tell already that I made note of things that Richard and I did in common and I know that I especially made note of things that he did, or believed, that are not currently in my repertoire. That is one of the many reasons that it is critical that you read! You need to see what makes sense for you. If you are at all serious about achieving a life that you are proud to call your own, then you need to read and find out first hand information that someone else gave their life to identify.
Till next time…here’s hoping you go read a good book!
Jack
We sat around in the church crypt trying to choose a good name. “I know,” she said. “What about “Virgin’? We’re complete virgins at business.” “And there aren’t many virgins left around here,” laughed one of the other girls. “It would be nice to have one here in name if nothing else.” “Great,” I decided on the spot. “It’s Virgin.” ~Richard Branson circa 1970
Online Success and Writing Part 2
Jul 22nd
“The greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write; a man will turn over half a library to make one book.” -Samuel Johnson
In my last post, I asked if you were willing to write for two hours per day if you knew that amount of effort would make you successful? Are you? It’s not a casual question and it is not a trivial commitment. Writing, and all of the associated tasks – reading, proofing, rewriting – these can be a challenge to add into your daily schedule. I know for me it was a significant effort to find this much additional time in my daily routine, I have been fully booked as a coach and a speaker for years, but the rewards from the discipline of daily writing have been tremendous and are growing rapidly.
So, are you serious about making money online and gaining all of the benefits that will bring? Then that means you need to write and from this point forward, I am going to assume that you are. (Motivation is not a constant for most people, it surely is not for me. Still you are going to need to stay in touch with your motivation to keep yourself moving forward. My NLP skills can do great things for us here and I will talk about motivation and motivation strategies in later posts.)
The Fundamentals of Online Success
Here again are the five fundamental pieces, as I understand them today, of becoming successful online.
- You need to be visible – people need to easily find you and whatever it is you want to sell online.
- You need to be credible – people need to believe that you know what you are talking about.
- You need something to sell – this can be your own products or the products of someone else or a combination.
- You need a following – people that care about what you write and say.
- You need partners – in Internet terms, you need affiliates, that will sell your products for you.
Writing is the Key!
Writing directly relates to each of these.
- For visibility – you need to be writing to your blog and making tweets on a very regular, but not irksome, basis.
- For credibility – as you write and read and research, you and your readers, will believe that you know what you are talking about.
- For having something to sell – ideally you are going to take some of the life knowledge that you already have and make it easy for the right people to find you and pay you for that knowledge.
- For having a following – the only way that I have discovered to do this, that really works and sticks around, is to be or become an expert and to write about it.
- For finding and developing partners – once you have good content, a following, and a product, it is fairly easy to find good partners.
So, writing really is the key. Another big question is: What do you write? Well, the topics are of course up to you, but there are some fundamental places you must write and I’ll talk about them soon.
This is a Work in Progress
Understand that I don’t have all of the answers yet. My blog is a chronicle of what I am learning and doing to become a success selling products online. I have hired the best coaches to help me and I am learning and doing as fast as I can. Why not come along on the journey?
What I am Doing Today to Move Forward
- I am writing a blog post.
- I am continuing to read: Writing Nonfiction by Dan Poynter and Losing my Virginity by Richard Branson.
- I am putting together my binder for my manuscript on my NLP based Goal Setting Product. (This will be my first product that I offer for sale online.)
- I am going to tweet on Twitter – enough to be useful, but not so much as to irritate.
- I will continue to work with my existing clients and help and learn.
- I will make some outbound marketing calls for locating speaking gigs for later in the year.
- I will go pick up my new IPhone (finally!) and start to learn how to use this tool.
I expect that will keep me busy. Till next time…Jack

Online Success and Writing
Jul 21st
“It took me fifteen years to discover that I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give it up because by that time I was too famous.” ~Robert Benchley
So, you want to make money online? Me too! Here is some of what I have discovered so far about this goal:
- You need to be visible – people need to easily find you and whatever it is you want to sell online.
- You need to be credible – people need to believe that you know what you are talking about.
- You need something to sell – this can be your own products or the products of someone else or a combination.
- You need a following – people that care about what you write and say.
- You need partners – in Internet terms, you need affiliates, that will sell your products for you.
Over time, I am going to discuss each of these five points in great detail and you can watch and follow each step that I take to successfully launch a product focusing on each of these points.
In the most basic sense, those are the overall pieces that you need to make money online. ( But wait, I have skipped tons of other ways to make money right away you say? It’s true, I have. I know there are lots of different ways to make money online. For example, I make good money now from my online efforts because I get hired to speak or coach or consult – but my mission is to make money from products online and this will be the main focus of my efforts and the main focus of these articles that follow my efforts.)
I know that this is way to basic for many of my readers. Thank you for your patience. I will get to material that benefits you very soon, I promise
. What I am actually going to be doing for the next few months on this blog is making a written record of exactly what I doing to launch my first product online. I am going to be talking about what I am doing on a daily basis and why and you can watch the entire show, from product idea to (hopefully!) successful product launch.
Here is the lesson (and question) for you to take home from today and ponder: are you willing to write five days per week for about two hours each time if you knew that this amount of effort could make you an online success?
Here is what I am doing today:
- I am writing a blog post.
- I am going to tweet perhaps three or four times online to my followers.
- I am going to transcribe notes that I have written regarding my first online product.
- I am going to try to figure out some of the many features on the newest Apple Iphone that I am picking up.
- I am going to be rereading some of Dan Poynter’s excellent book: Writing Nonfiction.

Change and the Structure Formerly Known as Sears Tower
Jul 16th
“All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward.” ~Ellen Glasgow
In late July of 2009, a name that has in many ways defined Chicago for more than 30 years, since 1973 in fact, will disappear. The Sears Tower will become The Willis Tower. Now this is strictly about money and corporate ego – this was part of the deal for leasing some space in the building. Still, as a former long-term Chicago resident, I must say that this decision sucks – I will even go so far as to say that it is stupid. The backlash is already significant and growing. You can read more about this decision here at The Chicago Tribune Online.
Check This Before You Make a Change!
Now I am a big believer in change; there was a time that I even identified myself as “An Agent of Change”. My training in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and my many years of coaching have made me an expert in helping others to change – changing associations, changing limiting beliefs, changing whatever is stopping or slowing them from achieving their goals. Still, before I change anything, I always carefully explore the ecology of the change on the entire system. That system might be the life of an individual or the life of a corporation, but I am going to make sure that all of the repercussions (good and bad) of a change are explored in-depth before I make them. In the case of the property owner of the Sears Tower, I think they did a terrible job of checking and evaluating ecology.
I doubt that much can be done to stop this idiocy at this point. I am writing this blog entry and my readers, many of which are in the Chicago area, may take some action. There are websites devoted to protesting this decision and I am sure that the landlord and Mayor of Chicago receive negative correspondence daily. For me, I have done what it makes sense for me to do about this, at this time, and here is the lesson that I choose to keep with me: “Be very careful to fully check the complete ecology of a change before you make it. There are often significant unexpected consequences, commonly negative. Never change something just because you can – if something has been around for a significant period of time, it is likely to be doing lots of good somewhere/somehow or it would not still be around.”
Goodbye Sears Tower. I made a point of visiting the Sears Tower every time I traveled back to Chicago – looks the Hancock Tower is getting my business now.

Why Not Live Your Ideal Life Right Now?
Jul 15th
“The greatest dreams are always unrealistic.” ~Will Smith
Here is the promised update on the “Come As You Will Be Party”. Again, the idea for this comes from chapter twelve of Jack Canfield’s book: The Success Principles. The basic concept is this: you get together with a group of people of similar ambition and you completely pretend to be living your dream life from five years from now. All of you talk up your current life: Where you are living; how you make your money; the kinds of cars that you now drive; the trips you are able to take; the people that you now hang with; the books you have written; whatever; this is your chance to feel what it will be like to really be living your dream life. You don’t worry about how you got there. You don’t worry about seeming outrageous. You listen to each other tell your more exciting dreams as though you have already accomplished them and you be excited for each other.
Do you want to feel what it is like to be a best-selling author? This is your chance. Do you want to feel what it is like to own a vacation home for your family and friends to use on the Amalfi Coast of Italy? (These are two of my dreams, but you can use them too!
)Feel that way now. What ever your dreams – come as though they are already real. Bring props, dress as you would, really be your future self; these are keys to making this exercise really useful.
For me, I thought this would be easy and feel very natural. I was surprised. I had a hard time at first really stepping into my future life. I had trouble really saying my dreams aloud to other people as though they had already happened – were already a part of my day to day existence. This was great information for me. I am not mentally ready yet for my dreams to happen. Wow! I am still reeling from that. I have some work to do on myself yet; this is not a surprise – I am just surprised how much work I have left to do!
Overall, this was a great experience. After the initial disorientation of living my future, I felt great! I could see and feel so many things that I had not even imagined and my motivation – Wow! I am completely committed now to doing what it takes to make my future life a reality and I gained lots of insight into what it will take to get me there. This was one of the most powerful exercises that I have done in years.
How about you? Do you know some like-minded ambitious people that would like to take a very powerful step towards making their dreams become real? Time to make some calls and schedule a party! Have fun and let me know how it goes.

Fasting, Imagination and Dreams
Jul 13th
“All the things one has forgotten scream for help in dreams.” ~Elias Canetti
Protein Fasting
I am starting to protein fast again today. It was very effective during the 3 days that I protein fasted 2 weeks ago and I thought I would go for a longer period of time and see how I do. Please understand that I am not recommending that anyone start or go on a fast; this is a huge and challenging commitment and without training and support – likely to be a very unpleasant experience. If you have training and support and a trained medical specialist to work with well – then consider fasting. The health benefits are huge – the psychological challenges are great to overcome, and you will lose weight faster than any other diet.
So, I am going to protein fast for 8 days this time. I will consume only water, protein powder free of carbohydrates and fats, and one essential oil capsule per day. I am going to consume approximately one hundred and eighty five grams of protein each day and at least four liters of water each day. Wish me luck!
A Come As You Will Be Party
My wife and I are having a small “come as you will be party” today. It will be a hoot. We are going to dress and act and talk just as we imagine that we will once we have already achieved our goals for the next five years. I have never participated in this kind of event before and I’m excited. The idea for this comes from chapter twelve of Jack Canfield’s book: The Success Principles. I would put this one on your list of books worth the time to read. I’ll talk more about this event and how it went soon.
There is Power to Change in Dreams
I decided to write down some more reasons to lose fat and get back into optimal health. These are very personal reasons and they excite me. When I think about doing them and achieving them, I feel motivated and motivation is a very good thing indeed while fasting!
Some more things I want to do:
- I want to run with the bulls in Pamplona Spain.
- I want to climb Kilimanjaro in Africa.
- I want to learn to hang-glide.
- I want to learn to parachute jump.
- I want to compete in the Paris to Dakar race.
What do all of these have in common? Well for me, I better be in much better shape to have a decent chance of surviving any of them! How about you? What are your dreams and what do you need to change to make them happen?

Are You Serious About Making Money Online?
Jul 10th
“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” ~e.e. cummings
Are you serious about making money online? Great! Me too! Bad news first:
- There are already approximately one hundred million blogs with perhaps two hundred and fifty thousand more being started every day – and you will need to compete with these for attention online.
- You will need to work hard and smart – although I believe in miracles, I am going to plan my work in such a way that miracles are not a mandatory part of my business plan.
- You will probably need to keep your day-job for awhile – perhaps an extended period of time, while you create your online business.
- You are going to need to develop new skills and new habits to be successful.
- You are certainly going to need to find the time to work on your online business – it will take significant time devoted on a regular basis.
Now for the good, even great news:
- The one hundred million blogs are important but not as much as you think. Most are orphaned by their authors within 90 days or are strictly devoted to socializing.
- The vast majority of blogs are updated rarely – if you write to yours five times per week you will absolutely stand out.
- In a world of two billion English speakers, a number that is growing rapidly, there is plenty of opportunity for new and marvelous success stories – including yours and mine!
- You will get to really be yourself – even if you don’t know who that is yet.
- You will have more friends – across the entire world – than you have ever before had in your life.
- People all around the world will care about you and care about what you think.
- Carefully planned and worked, your online business can grow more rapidly than any other type of business in the world today.
- Your financial investment in your online business, at least in the beginning, is trivial compared to the real opportunity.

Your Work Should Be Like Play Especially Online

“Thousands of geniuses live and die undiscovered – either by themselves or by others.” ~Mark Twain
Last time I encouraged you to set a small goal – to make $250 dollars per month from your online business – each and every month. I still think this is a great goal and only the smallest percentage of people trying to make money online ever even make this goal a reality. Wow – why? I think it is because they are all going for the big quick score without doing the groundwork first.
It was interesting the huge number of tweets that I received yesterday promising overnight riches from online business. (For those of you that are not yet on Twitter – a “tweet” is a 140 character micro-blog. Twitter is becoming a force that must be taken into account and I will talk more about how and how not to use this service soon.)
Today, I just want you to think about your passions and your hobbies. What do you love to do – not for money, but because you just love it? Or think about it this way, if money was no concern, how would you honestly be spending your time? This bit of self-analysis is critical for your future online success and is my suggested homework for you. Look at what you love to do – even if you have never had time to do it and just write that down. Next time I’ll talk about why this was important.

Making Money Online and Your First Goal
Jul 8th
“Adopt the pace of nature: her secret is patience.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
I am going to share with you, my faithful readers, a great goal to consider: How about setting a goal to make $250 dollars per month from your online business? How does that goal sound? Does it sound small? I hope so – I want it to sound small and achievable – doable, and yet there is a great reason why to choose this goal for your Internet business.
(Now, I know that many of my readers are not based in the United States and $250 USA dollars may not have any meaning for you. Let me try to find kind of a way to translate this into virtually any kind of money: In the USA, the minimum wage for most workers is around $7.00 per hour. At $7.00 per hour, $250 dollars equals about 36 hours of work – nearly a full work-week of 40 hours here. $7.00 per hour is the kind of wage that most people right out of high school will probably start at – without any particular speciality skills. So for you, whatever someone working an entry level job for 36 hours can expect to earn – that should be your initial monthly monetary goal. Does that make sense?)
Now, why $250 dollars per month? In study after study of families and individuals in the United States that end up declaring bankruptcy or become financially insolvent, the amount that they are short each and every month that finally builds and destroys their finances and credit, is around $250 per month. Interesting huh? For the vast majority of people, if they had a consistent additional $250 dollars per month of income, they could stay afloat financially. That is a great goal and a great starting place!
Now I know that the Internet is full of get rich quick schemes and some of these might even be real – let me repeat the might. Most of them are not real or they are certainly not sustainable. What I want you to consider is getting to a real and consistent and sustainable additional $250 per month from your Internet business. (If you are already way past this amount, and I know that some of you are, then consider what I talk about here from the standpoint of making your income more consistent and more sustainable. From past experience income that rapidly builds without a solid foundation can also rapidly decrease and that is no fun!)
There is another great reason to choose $250 dollars per month (or your local equivalent) from your online business as a great starting place. Once you are making a consistent $250 per month, you will have already built a great foundation that will let you move up rapidly and consistently from there. How long will this take? Come back next time and we’ll talk about that.
By the way, I have also set this goal for myself. Although I already make much more than this amount from my blog – in terms of getting hired to speak and coach, I do not currently make any income from my blog from product sales – so that is my initial goal – to make a consistent $250 each and every month from product sales and together, we will go over every step to make this happen.

A Worthy Cause, Making Money Online and Motivation
Jul 6th
“Did universal charity prevail, earth would be a heaven, and hell a fable.” ~Charles Caleb Colton
Hi all. We are going to talk just a bit about growing your online business in the this post, but first – Wow! I recently had the pleasure and honor of being recontacted by one of my personal heroes. I am still excited about this and my posting to this blog was the reason that I was found at all!
Just a Bit about HomeClub
Some of you have heard about my time at HomeClub and all of the wonderful, and awful, experiences that I had there. To recap in short, my first job out of college ending being at one of the fastest growing companies in American history – and I got to work with them from shortly after funding, thru rapid growth, thru massive cash struggles, thru their IPO, thru the death of a company president on the job, thru their acquisition by another company and thru the beginning of their death thru stupidity – and all of this in just a nibble over 5 years! Wow! Double Wow!!
One of My First Heroes
One of the founders of HomeClub was, and is, a man named George Handgis. When I met George, I was a newly hired temporary worker, the ink not yet dry on my Bachelor of Science in Business diploma from CU in Boulder Colorado, and George was the Vice President of HomeClub. George was already all of the things that I aspired to be: He was friendly and genuinely concerned about the happiness and well-being of his employees. (Thanks again for the box seat tickets to the LA Gran Prix, George!) He was creative and innovative. He was a massive business success – an expert at rapidly growing a business. He was elegant, he cared about his family and took good care of them, and of great importance to me at the time – he drove great cars! This may sound unimportant, but let’s be honest, I still love great cars – I expect I always will! George became one of heroes and my desire to be similar to George Handgis became one of the reasons that I was able to retire the first time as young as I did.
A Worthy Cause
When Zayre bought HomeClub, and began the process of destroying their new purchase (I expect this was not their actual intention, but it certainly seemed that way), George retired and moved to Hawaii. Of the many things that I am sure George is involved with, he runs a great charitable cause in Hawaii that has touched the lives of many people: The Jonathan Dale Miller Foundation. Here is an excerpt from their website:
The Jonathan Dale Miller Foundation
Jonathan was a very special boy who developed a terminal illness when he was 9 years old. Before passing away a year later, he was asked if he had any wishes. He said, “I want to feed the hungry and give toys to children at Christmas that usually would not receive any.” His selflessness led to the formation of the Jonathan Dale Miller Foundation, which does just what he wished for.
Our Mission: The Jonathan Dale Miller Foundation will establish the benchmark of how small charities should be operated. We vow to honor the final wishes of Jonathan Miller of, in his words, “feeding the hungry people and giving toys (and clothes) to kids at Christmas that wouldn’t usually get toys.” There will not be any administrative costs and 100% of contributions received will be used exclusively to help others consistent with Jonathan’s very specific wishes.
(Jack writing again: Now that is a worthy cause – real people directly helping real people)
“True charity is the desire to be useful to others with no thought of recompense.” ~Emanuel Swedenborg
Consider a Contribution
Some of you, after visiting the website of the foundation, could make a money contribution. Please consider doing so. (George did not ask me to make any contribution at all – I am just making my kind of contribution, at least in part, thru this blog post.) Many of you will not currently be in a position where you can make a financial contribution. I understand. Consider this instead: In today’s world, it is critical to be very visible to the online world. What does visible mean? For me and I hope for you, it means top of page ranking on Google and Yahoo for the search terms that most directly relate to you and your company. For Jonathan’s Foundation in Hawaii, I would argue that high organic search engine ranking for the term: Great Hawaii Charitable Cause would be a beautiful thing. (If that makes no sense to you, no worries, we will talk about it one day soon.)
Consider giving an Inbound Link
Here is a gift you can give almost anyone, anyone that has an online presence, give them an inbound link. The more real inbound links that point towards a site, the better – the higher that site ranks organically. So, for example, for Jonathan’s Foundation, the next blog entry you make or tweet that you post, consider adding this little piece: “Here is a nice charitable cause that you might consider reading about: http://jonathansfoundation.org/” Chain that link to the website and move on. You have made a charitable contribution. Use the terms “great Hawaii charitable cause” and you have made an even better contribution. It’s as simple as that. Consider doing that for any cause that you feel strongly about – it will make a difference for them – especially as the ranking of your own site increases.
What does this have to do with making money online?
It has to do with motivation. If you, and I, are going to build a significant business online, it is going to take work and probably a significant amount of thinking – perhaps the hardest work of all. Most likely, you will need to keep your “day job”, perhaps for an extended period of time, as you grow your online business. Most likely, you will need to give up some activities that you enjoy, at least for awhile, in order to free up the needed time to grow your online business. Most likely, you are going to need to move well beyond your current comfort zone, your vision of who you are and what you can do, and this will likely need to be a permanent change. The energy to do all of this – the motivation – your why – this needs to stay in front of you where you can easily see it and stay in touch with it. The motivation to do more, the motivation to make each day an investment in your future is key. You will find this motivation in worthy causes – your own causes and worthy causes of others that touch you deeply.

Come visit me again soon. You are going to be watching me grow my online business live – day by day – as I convert from a 100% coaching and speaking driven income to an income that is largely driven by online business. Watch, learn and please comment!
Thanks again George Handgis – wishing you and yours the very best!
