More About Transformational Perspectives

Posted by Jack on 22nd August 2007

“The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen.” - Frank Lloyd Wright

Before you can begin to build the perfect perspectives for yourself, it is very useful to understand how negative perspectives work. They are extremely powerful. Most of the ones that I see people struggling with affect every aspect of their lives. Let’s look at one from my last post.

“I have so much to do. I just don’t know what to do next.” It is useful to look at this statement, this perspective from a number of different levels.

  • What can of actions will this person in this perspective likely take? What will be their likely behaviors from this place? (I will say from experience, that most people from this place will likely be overwhelmed and take little or no action. Or they will go from task to task, trying to get something going on 30 things at the same time and end up making no real progress at all on anything!)
  • How will a person in this perspective likely feel? (How about depressed, stressed, tired, overwhelmed, abused, sad, defeated…now there is a potent cocktail of emotional state! Shaken, not stirred, served with a twist and deadly for sure!)
  • How will a person in this perspective influence others around them?
  • By being in this perspective habitually, on a regular basis, what will a person start to believe about themselves, the world around them, and their own likely future?
  • Let’s say that person spends just 10% of their time in this perspective, day after day, (and I know people that spend 90% of their time in this perspective!), how will this affect their ability to manifest their desired destiny…leveraged over a lifetime?

More next time…and yes, we will fix this!

Are Your Habitual Points of View Holding You Back?

Posted by Jack on 21st August 2007

“Luke, you’ll find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view” - Obi-Wan Kenobi speaking to Luke Skywalker - from the “Star Wars” Film Trilogy

I am going to be writing about points of view, perspectives if you like, for the next few entries. Once you understand perspectives, even just being aware of what they are and how they work, you will be in powerful place to start to positively influence yourself and influence others.

Let’s start with some examples of perspectives:

Disempowering:

“My Life is a Mess!”
“I have so much to do, I just don’t know what to do next.”
“They gave that promotion to someone else. This company stinks.”
“I am so depressed. I just can’t get myself to do anything.”
“No one loves me, and they never will”

If am sure that you have heard these statements, or something very similar, from yourself or others.

Empowering:

The Importance of State and County Fairs

Posted by Jack on 19th August 2007

Harry Ware: ‘Biggest boar in the world, I bet.’ Margy Frake: ‘All depends on how you spell it.’” - from the 1945 movie State Fair

I love going to state and county fairs. I have been going to them since I was a little boy,and since my parents moved often because my father’s job often required a transfer for a promotion, I have been to fairs all over the United States and Western Canada. (of course in Canada, they are provincial fairs…same thing)

I must not be the only one that really likes these events. There have been three versions of the movie “State Fair” released: 1933, 1945 and 1962. It is fun to watch these still and observe what has changed and what has remained about the same.

I love fairs for the expensive and usually nutrition free food…things that I would normally never even consider eating as part of my regular diet seem appropriate here. I mean really, when is the last time you made funnel cakes at home or decided that you really needed an 18 inch long corn dog? Yet at the fair, it almost seems wrong if you don’t have these foods. I recently became a vegetarian in an effort to heal myself from gout and there was almost nothing I could even eat at the fair.

I love fairs … Read the rest of this entry »

What Can You Learn From Howard Hughes?

Posted by Jack on 17th August 2007

Howard by Noah Dietrich

I am a reader. I love to read and thankfully I am pretty fast at it. I read at least 3 books each and every week, and one of these is always business related. Sometimes I am lucky enough that the business book is actually well written and is at least as enjoyable as a great fiction book. This book is one of those rare enjoyable business books.

This book was written by Noah Dietrich, the strong right hand of Howard Hughes. There are lots of fun things about this book. It was written when Noah was already 83 years old and hadn’t worked for Howard for decades. It was published in 1972. (He and Howard broke up their business relationship in 1957) So why should you care about this old book? Read the rest of this entry »

Car Addiction

Posted by Jack on 15th August 2007

“I think cars today are almost the exact equivalent of the great Gothic cathedrals.  I mean the supreme creation of
an era, conceived with passion by unknown artists, and consumed in image if not in usage by a whole population
which appropriates them as a purely magical object.”  — Roland Barthes - The New Citroën (1957)

Okay. I’ll admit it. I am a recovering car addict. I loved cars. I loved driving them. I loved owning them. I loved going way to fast in them. At the peak of my illness, I owned 13 cars and 2 motorcycles. This would be many years ago now. (The continents had not yet separated and you could drive to Europe from Colorado, although it was still a long ways.) Then I got divorced, the court gave all of my cars to my lovely ex-wife as part of our settlement and I moved to Los Angeles to restart my life. (No, we did not get divorced because of the cars!) So how did this terrible illness strike me? Read the rest of this entry »

Cheyenne Frontier Days 2007

Posted by Jack on 13th August 2007

I love the American West.  Playing Cowboy, horses, ranches, chuckwagon food…all of these things are a blast to me.  Since I live in the city, I do not get enough of being a cowboy to satisfy me.  That is why, most years since 1976, you will find me in Cheyenne Wyoming part of every July at Cheyenne Frontier Days.  What a hoot!

Rodeos, great country music (and that is not a mistaken combination of words!), grilled and barbecued everything and all of the rides you need to really get sick to your stomach trying to keep up with your kids…it is all here.

DSCN2691

Expect it hot though.  I have  gone to this event many  times, and this year was the first year that  the heat did not reach  at least 90.  Thank you  to the rain the day before and the clouds the day I was there.  Till next time…Jack…aka: Urbancowboy!

My First Entry with a new Host and Upgraded Wordpress

Posted by Jack on 9th August 2007

This has been an epic battle and I wasn’t expecting it.  I tried to work with my old host and get WordPress installed and upgraded.  No luck.  I finally just wrote off the rest of my hosting contract with them and moved to a new host; a host that promises to be very friendly with WordPress.  Wish me luck!
